A disc extrusion is a degenerative spine condition where the nucleus matter of the intervertebral disc secretes into the spinal column. The pads that cushion the vertebrae in the spine gradually weaken and become brittle over time causing damage in the fibrous walls of the disc and the gel-like substance begins to extrude into the spinal column.

Disc extrusions are not usually symptomatic however, if the ruptured disc material makes contact with the spinal cord nerve roots and compresses a nerve, symptoms of pain, numbness or weakness may occur.
