Facet joints connect the spinal vertebrae together. The facet joint has a cartilage lining so that the bones glide smoothly allowing the spine to easily flex, rotate, twist and extend. The function of the facet joint is to provide stability, mobility and support to the spine.
Each vertebra has two facet joints, one on each side. As the spine joints develop osteoarthritis or degenerate, the cartilage in the facet joint is worn down as a result of aging, injury or wear and tear, known as facet disease.
