Foraminal narrowing, also known as foraminal stenosis is a condition of the spine caused by degeneration associated with aging. The foramen is the space or opening between every pair of vertebrae designed for the nerve roots to run through the spinal column. The vertebral foramen constitutes a canal for the protection of the spinal cord.
The size of the foramen is variable due to placement, pathology, spinal loading and posture. It becomes a significant issue when there is narrowing of these ‘canals’ if the nerve roots become irritated or compressed. Once the compression or irritation occur, it can invariably cause pain and radiation of pain, tingling and numbness along the length of the nerve.
