HNP, a herniated disc is a spinal condition in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, gel-like inner material, the nucleus pulposus to extrude beyond the damaged outer walls of the intervertebral discs.
It is usually due to age related degeneration, although trauma, lifting injuries or straining may result in the gradual deterioration of the discs and develop a tear allowing the nucleus pulposus to push through the disc wall and extrude into the spinal canal.
Most often, a herniated disc is not symptomatic. If the nucleus pulposus impinges on a nerve root or spinal cord, symptoms may arise. If nerve compression occurs, symptoms can be potentially debilitating.
Symptoms may include:
- Chronic pain
- Sciatic pain
- Numbnesss
- Weakness
- Tingling
- Loss of motion, reflexes
