Spinal stenosis is an abnormal narrowing (stenosis) in the spinal canal. Narrowing to the spinal canal may result in neurological deficits which include pain, numbness, tingling and loss of motor control. Stenosis can be threatening if the spinal cord becomes compressed or damaged. There are two types of spinal stenosis: lumbar stenosis and cervical stenosis.

• Lumbar spinal stenosis is the condition in which the spinal nerve roots in the lower back are compressed producing symptoms of sciatica, tingling, weakness or numbness that radiates from the low back into the buttocks and legs, especially with activity.
• Cervical spinal stenosis may often be more serious by compressing the spinal cord causing severe symptoms of major body weakness or paralysis.

Spinal stenosis generally develops with age-related changes including degenerative disc disease, arthritic changes and disc herniations most common in people who are 50 and older. It generally does not cause symptoms unless the spinal cord or nerves are compressed.

Symptoms may include:

• Stiffness, pain, or numbness in the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, or legs
• Balance and coordination problems, such as shuffling or tripping while walking
• Loss of bowel or bladder control
