Sport-related Injury Treatment

Jupiter And Ft. Lauderdale Office Serving All of Florida

With any significant physical activity, especially athletics and sports, comes the possibility of injury. For those of us living an active, athletic lifestyle, an injury can happen at any time. The severity of sports-related injuries can range from minor to critical with some injuries requiring surgical intervention for complete recovery.

Injury and/or damage are not always caused by trauma in the strictest sense. For those who exercise consistently or participate in a sport, repeated wear and tear on the body alone can lead to excessive stress on muscles and joints, resulting in injury such as sprains and strains.

Sprains and strains are the most common type of sports injuries. A strain is trauma to a muscle due to overstretching or tearing of muscle fibers. Trauma to a ligament, either by tearing it or stretching it beyond its capacity, is a sprain.

Activities involving contact such as football have the potential for more serious injuries, including head and spinal cord trauma.

Prevention and diligence are the keys to reducing the risk of a damaging and lingering injury:

  • Listen to your body. While it might seem like a good idea to push ahead and struggle with new or challenging activities, pace yourself according to your own skill level and experience.
  • Warm up and adequately stretch before and after every workout.
  • Get appropriate training for your specific exercise or athletic program.
  • Use the right equipment and gear. Whether finding the correct yoga mat or running shoes, do your best to equip yourself properly.
